The first layer: contributions

Build a scenario range

A 20% fall requires a 25% gain to recover because the gain applies to a smaller balance. This is why average returns can hide a difficult path and why risk capacity matters.

Volatility drag and uneven returns

A lump sum grows according to the starting amount, return and number of periods. Regular contributions add a second stream of money. The result changes significantly when contributions occur at the beginning rather than the end of a period, or when the return assumption changes.
